Breakdowns, Incidents and Emergency Decisions
Protect people first, then the vehicle and traffic flow.
Control the immediate risk
If the vehicle develops a problem, reduce speed smoothly and move to the safest available location. Avoid stopping in a live lane unless movement is impossible.
Make the scene visible
Use hazard warning lights where appropriate and keep occupants away from moving traffic. Contact the relevant emergency or recovery service from a protected position.
After a collision
Stop, assess danger and request help when needed. Do not stand between vehicles or enter traffic. Follow lawful reporting and information-exchange requirements.
